What is the FSVCA?

The Fernie Snow Valley Community Association is a non profit society registered in 1993 with the BC Government under the Society Act with the following stated purpose:

"The purpose of the society is to provide a forum for people interested in the community situated at the base of Fernie Alpine Resort.. Membership would not be necessarily limited to property owners on the hill, nor is it anticipated that all property owners would choose to join the society."

History in a Nutshell

In fact the main focus of the association was to obtain fire protection for our community. In other words ensure that the Fernie Fire Department was paid to respond if there was a fire in one of our properties. This was accomplished for three and a half years by getting all the property owners on the hill to voluntarily contribute their share of this fee. Society status was necessary to permit bank accounts and contracts with the City.

Ultimately this system proved unworkable and the Society undertook to get a petition passed that would have the Regional District of East Kootenay collect the necessary monies on our property tax bills and enter into a contract with the City of Fernie on our behalf. This was successful and fire protection began again in July of 1998 and will continue for a five year period.

In 1999 and 2000 the big issue was the development of our Official Community Plan, where with the help of the Regional District we were able to have significant input on a number of issues of importance to the area homeowners

Since 2002 the main issues have revolved around utility charges, the rent charge and general governance issues.

Although the ski hill has been renamed to Fernie Alpine Resort, the members have decided to retain the historic Fernie Snow Valley name for the association.

Mailing List

All property owners on the ski hill are encouraged to join our mailing list which is used for communications from the association. Keeping track of the large number of ever changing postal addresses is impossible for a small volunteer organization, so email has become our principal means to convey news about issues of interest to our community. Anyone is welcome to join the list and there is no obligation and addresses are not shared with other organizations.
